A week on the Pompey's, then a little Anthrax & 2 days on the Mule! 31/10 to 08/11 1987
The Portsmouth to Cardiff services were due to finish in May 1988, I and many of the Crompton roadshow were spending an increasing number of days out "on the Bash", sometimes using Leave & sometimes just going Sick from work!
With so many booked turns to cover and mileage to accumulate, very little time was spent eating or drinking - no breakfast, food on the go during the day from chippy's and then little or no time for Beer!
Saturday 31st October
Unfortunately the brickworks where I worked had started working on Saturday mornings due to demand, as the only person trained on my Brick stacking machine this meant I could no longer leap on Friday evening for the 2252 Waterloo - Weymouth (booked a 33) but could only make the 1410 Waterloo - Salisbury on Saturday afternoon.

47584? What the...! The move was to get to Waterloo, services were booked to run via Laverstock the rest of the weekend which meant Crompton's would be hauling them to/from Basingstoke to/from Bournemouth & Weymouth.

Sunday 1st November
Our booked Southern overnights consisted of hanging around for several hours, followed by the actual overnight which could range in duration from an hour or so to about 3 hours long, normally followed by at least another couple of hours of hanging around waiting for services to start again.
A couple of hours killing time around Waterloo station tonight by the looks of it. Then result: a "Slim" on the Fareham!

Well that was a busy Sunday. Plenty of mileage, 21 moves & 15 different Loco's.
Monday 2nd November
Only the couple of hours to wait for the mileage to start all over again - this time a full day on the Pompey's beckoned.

Tuesday 3rd November
This was a proper overnight, you could normally stay dossed in a compo while the train was loaded with mail at Southampton. There would normally be someone else doing the move, sharing a compo was safer & meant there'd be less chance of getting invaded too.

After all these years I have no recollection of my reason for going back to London this evening.
I've no moves to/from Sittingbourne in my original notepad, Anthrax played a Gig in Nottingham on this night but I couldn't have got to/from that either. I may just have been meeting my Cousin for Beers, he was at University in Uxbridge at this time.

A bit of a quandary here, my machine 33035 was working the Brighton but Peak 45110 was in the next platform on the 1615 Weymouth, probably the last time a Peak was to visit the seaside town.
I decided to take 33035 all the way to Brighton, so on departure I flailed at the line up of Cranks all hanging out of the windows behind the Peak, I also bellowed out that my Crompton was far superior to their wagon!
33035 Bristol TM - Westbury 1085 1510 Cardiff - Brighton 28m 17ch
Somewhat stupidly I changed my mind, leaping at Westbury for the following Peak! I was instantly confronted by some of those who I'd only recently berated when leaving Bristol!!
A totally inspired run followed, the Peak was a loud one (& a winner!) and as it was Fireworks night we had a never-ending display lighting up the journey on our way to the coast.
45110 Westbury - Weymouth 2O60 1615 Bristol - Weymouth 58m 79ch
Good a run as it was, I again didn't fancy the journey back up to Bristol, the half dozen cranks still on board were surprised by my decision but I couldn't flag any more Crompton mileage today.

Bowled here, the 0500 Yeovil was either units or a class 50. I'd probably have got my head down if it was units so it was most probably a steaming great Log.

8 days into the Bash and seemingly still going strong! Looking back I don't know how we did it, no hotels, showers or probably even washes, with only the few clothes you could carry. Add to that you'd only have the cash you started with to see you through the trip, very few cashpoints in the UK in those days!

The pair were booked on the 0550 Exeter - Hove & 1112 Brighton - Paignton (to Exeter) on a Saturday, I rarely went beyond Salisbury but the lure of pioneer 33001 was too great. What wasn't booked was what happened next - 33001 worked the next up service to London Waterloo!

These 9 days had it all. From the non-stop frenetic moves on the Bristol - Pompey's, through to finishing up with 2 days travelling the London - Salisbury - Exeter "Mule" route.
We would have to wait a few more years, until March 1991, when 33102 & 33114 got put into the main loco pool for the Exeter's, due to poor availability of the class 50 fleet, before we got regular trips down the Mule.
