All Line Rover 22/07/1988 to 31/07/1988 "Why can't we get the Electronic Token?"

The Pompey's had finished in May of this year, since then my weekends had been spent leaping around the country scratching locos. I couldn't yet face spending my days between Waterloo & Salisbury on a succession of class 33/1 "Bagpipes", the only booked Crompton diagrams left.
I would return South every Saturday night, however, to cover the 0330 class 33/1 overnight out of Waterloo to Portsmouth which was then booked back up to Waterloo then out to Salisbury. This kept my Crompton mileage ticking over. It was now time for some Annual Leave & an All Line Rover.

The "Gen" on the days runners & riders was normally available about 0400 on a Saturday at New Street, you'd all meet upstairs before 1E26 the 0434 to Leeds then someone read out the loco numbers off sheets of Tops printouts. Thankyou very much to the gentlemen concerned & the time they spent getting the info together!
The 0620 New Street to Aberystwyth was this summer booked a pair of Buxton 37/6's.

Sunday 24/07/88

I probably walked from Paddington to Waterloo, a bit of a chore after a long night & day. Add to that the 0330 33/1 overnight wasn't running due to Engineering works so a 2nd night with little sleep.

A major surprise awaited here - A Steamex was running from Waterloo to Yeovil Jn today & the power as far as Salisbury turned out to be 33008 & 33050 in Multi. Normal tickets were valid, you only needed a special ticket for the Steam section. Result!

Decision time here, the pair of 33's from this morning were going light to Romsey to re-engine the Steam charter there. So I got on the Charter from Salisbury - I think I was charged £5 for the winning "Taw Valley" to Romsey.

I had been travelling with Steve Thomas (Neath) on the Charter, the two of us were being joined by my brother (Puppy) for an overnight to Scotland. We were looking to travel on a Motorail service out of Euston, you couldn't reserve it but if you had an All Line Rover you could ask the Guard if there was space on the service. We were in luck - the train consisted of all 1st class compartments, me & Neath slept laid on the seats & Puppy slept on the thickly carpeted floor - A Hellfire move!

The return journey on the 1812 Wick to Inverness turned into a bit of a farce! The journey started out normally enough but while on route the Driver seemed unable to get the Electronic Token off the RETB signalling system. We would arrive at a station, stop, then shunt back / pull forward - then eventually go forward towards Inverness. This happened at several stations. It came as no surprise that when we rolled into Inverness there was a reception party of besuited BR officials waiting to interrogate the Driver!

Time to head home for a much needed bath & some fresh clothes. I also knew a Mystex was running to Canterbury and a Crompton was the expected traction.

Saturday 30/07/88

No early hours moves today, during the last 3 months of weekend scratch moves I'd taken to sleeping in the waiting room at the South end of Platform 1 during the early hours on a Saturday - this waiting room had been given the nickname "Poodle's Kennel" by the many cranks who would also be sleeping at New Street at this time. Always up about 0400 to go upstairs to find out todays runners & riders before 1E26 of course.

Cheers Poodle.
