All Line & Wessex Rovers combined 11/07/1987 to 26/07/1987
Although I started the noble art of Trainspotting at the age of 13 (or roughly September 1978) this mainly involved after school visits to Sittingbourne railway station & Saturday daytrips to Gillingham (Kent) where most of the loco's from Hoo Jn would stable at the weekend, plus the EMU depot there would be stacked out with units. It wasn't until my 16th Birthday that I was allowed out on weekend trips to the more far-flung parts of the UK!
This would see me depart after my paper round Saturday morning and would often involve an overnight at places like Doncaster, Crewe or Bristol where a stream of overnight trains & newspaper/mail trains meant the station buffets were open all night. Sometimes overnight trains were involved - if I could make them part of my ticket's validity of course.

It wasn't until the January snows of 1987 in Kent where I felt the need to start Bashing my favourite class 33's in earnest as their sphere of operations were starting to decline. A couple of weeks holiday off work saw me out on a Wessex rover followed by a 2week All-Line Rover.

Now for something completely different - I was travelling up to Buxton for a couple of evenings drinking with my Cousin. He was at Brunel University but had a six month work placement in Buxton as part of his course. 73 pubs in the town at the time - what could possibly go wrong?
The very next train for a start - delayed somewhere in the West Country so an NB 47 started the service from Exeter using the MK1's off the Saturday Barnstaple service!

This developed into a bit of a Railtour - we ran via Gloucester where the loco ran round then when we got to Birmingham New Street a horde of Bashers boarded with the news that we were diverted via Shrewsbury to Crewe!
The wires were booked to be off between Stockport & Piccadilly today for Engineering works, remarkably ours was the first NB loco working of the day from Stockport - further hordes of Bashers bailed on here! Even better an equally NB 47228 dropped onto the back at Picc to take the set back to Exeter on the 1627 to Plymouth!

Well no desperation there then - a 16 day Bash with only 4 nights in bed (2 of which I think were on the floor in my cousins lodgings!). I had wanted to make good use of the All-Line Rover so a trip to the Far North was always on the cards, even though the traction was not really my cup of tea. Also having a base in Buxton for a couple of days meant I could Spin & Win a little.
The Pompey's were non-stop days with hardly ever a break, even for Beer or food - plenty of years for standing around stations waiting for Gen, or long sessions in pubs like the Village in Salisbury or the Red Lion near Waterloo, in the years that followed!
