Austria & Hungary 06/06 to 10/06 2008 "Who swopped the Railtour loco!"

A trip to Vienna to do an OBB Nostalgiezug to Keszthely, lots of required track for an Austrian loco and planned to be an OBB 2050 diesel throughout. We flew in on the 5th for 2 nights in Vienna.

A day with the wife doing the more touristy side of Vienna, taking in some castles and gardens along the way. Followed by a night at the Theatre to watch Ben Elton's Queen epic "We will Rock You", very good fun it was too.

The day of the Railtour, even though we were staying in a Hotel in the middle of Vienna a very early taxi was required! 
This was followed by great disappointment on my part, OBB had taken so many bookings for this tour that they bumped up the loading by a couple of extra coaches - which led them to decide a single 2050 would not cope so they swopped it for a 2143! Cheers then.

My dismay at suffering the 2143 was dispelled somewhat once we crossed the border into Hungary, all new track for a 2143 instead of a 2050 so still worth doing the tour.
As we rolled into Keszthely station I saw Ferenc Hoo & a few others lineside, photting the tour arriving. I was going to nip out of the station & say my hello's but the heavens opened at that moment - a downpour of Biblical proportions put paid to that idea!

We had only planned to do the outward leg of the tour, we had decided to spend our next few days in Hungary. We once again had a room booked at the Hotel Gabriella in Tapolca, so after a fine afternoon al fresco 3 course meal we relaxed in Tapolca for the evening.

A simple plan for today, a transit move from Tapolca to Sopron, which was to be our base for the next two night's.

It was with great sadness and shock that I heard, on Sunday 9th May 2021, of the untimely death of John "Zuzzy Hell" Sandham. First trip to the Fatherland - Germany 26/08 to 02/09 1989

Our first ever trip to Germany, a three pronged attack on the Diesels of DB by myself (Poodle) Steve Thomas (Neath) & John "Zuzzy Hell" Sandham. The holder of the Kursbuch and therefore chief planner honours fell to Neath, even though he was only of tender years (but just old enough to drink - which made up for it).With the remit of as many diesel locos and new lines during daylight hours then the odd electric to get in place for the overnight.(New locos again denoted by #). All Line & Wessex Rovers combined 11/07/1987 to 26/07/1987

Although I started the noble art of Trainspotting at the age of 13 (or roughly September 1978) this mainly involved after school visits to Sittingbourne railway station & Saturday daytrips to Gillingham (Kent) where most of the loco's from Hoo Jn would stable at the weekend, plus the EMU depot there would be stacked out with units. It wasn't until my 16th Birthday that I was allowed out on weekend trips to the more far-flung parts of the UK! This would see me depart after my paper round Saturday morning and would often involve an overnight at places like Doncaster, Crewe or Bristol where a stream of overnight trains & newspaper/mail trains meant the station buffets were open all night. Sometimes overnight trains were involved - if I could make them part of my ticket's validity of course.
