My first ever single manned trip to Germany, my 3rd trip overall. I had decided to avoid having to watch The Great Escape again on Xmas day or being sardined in a pub on New Years Eve. New track for diesel (in daylight) & of course winning locos being the main aim.(New locos again denoted by #.)

A pre-arranged move to meet Graham Belton (Peckham Fly) to see in the New Year, managed to do new track Muhldorf - Freilassing on the way.

The "Fly" was duly met on the platform, first job was to find some digs & drop off the bags. Of course not the quietest night of the year to get a last minute hotel room, in the end we managed to get a dirty room in a very run-down "Pension" which seemed to be leaning on the Hotel next door for support!
We soon found a "music-pub" in the Old town area where for a set amount of schillings you got free drinks all night & a glass of champagne at midnight. You also got an armband so could nip out for a snack if required. They make money with most people on this & can control numbers - however I more than made up for this in the drinking stakes!
Mistletoe was about so plenty of Fraulein's got the pleasure (!) of kisses from the Poodle (me) or the Fly (him). I can't remember if we both found a partner for the "midnight waltz", de rigueur in Austria to see in the New Year - much more upmarket than "Auld Langs Syne" but less atmospheric.
After this the beers took their toll on Peckham, he snoozed (he said he'd rather sleep in here than the Flea pit we'd had to check in to!) while I made sure I got my moneys worth into the wee small hours........
That just left the problem of two drunks staggering around Salzburg trying to find the aforementioned "Pension" - which we eventually managed but not before we were on the point of giving up!

Meeting up with Peckham in Salzburg to see in the New Year was a bit different too! Got back into the UK with only a few days to recover before me & Peckham flew to Yugoslavia on our way to Greece.......
