Simbach , Sessions & too many Possessions!

With 8 Rest Days looming on the horizon and the December 14th Timetable change fast approaching,
a trip to the Fatherland to rake in any required track for diesel seemed the only option.
As I would be travelling single manned I decided to take it easy & only do overnights every other night and not be as desperate as normal! To this end I obtained as much brewery gen as I could gather for the areas I would be visiting and off I set for the airport.
As usual, # indicates a required loco. All moves in KM’s (except in UK indicated m for miles).

Peterborough was cold and draughty so I cut down the fester by doing the Norwich unit as far as Ely, not realising someone had built a Safeway’s outside the station since I had last alighted there ( how many years ago?) so a quick fried breakfast was caned in.
A couple of pints of Guinness to follow whilst waiting in the new Ryanair lounge at Stansted Airport for a right-time departure.
Frankfurt Hahn’s website shows a bus route to Kirn on the Mainz – Saarbrucken line but no departure times so the first move was to view the bus stops outside, yielding a very handy 1430 bus, so back into the Airport Bar for a half litre of wheat beer.
I had decided to cover some Kaiserslauten 218 diagrams as I’ve never had much luck with them and still needed quite a few, with the added bonus of not having to suffer the bus journey into Frankfurt.
I could not believe needing the first loco to roll in – needing three on the trot finished me completely!
I then dropped down to Karlsruhe to position myself for the Orient Express overnight (EN263) and walked into town to sample a few beers. I was unable to find any of the brewpubs but did come across a tied house for one local brewery, four different beers on and top nosh.
This was all a prelude to a disaster – the overnight was stuck somewhere in France! So we were all put onto a crappy 425 unit to Stuttgart for two single car shires to Plochingen where the Dortmund – Wien West (EN213) overnight was stopped additionally to pick us up. Cheers, two hours sleep!

Todays main aims were to do three pieces of new track for diesel, Augsburg – Munchen,
Weilheim – Schongau & Muhldorf – Simbach. Neither loco was required on the Augsburg – Munchen, this being followed by NO new locos on any of the turns covered around Buchloe!
A quick beer was caned in over the road from Geltendorf station after a quick Spar shop visit, only to see 218232 (required!) in the station on my return. I couldn’t do it as the track to Schongau was more pressing, however I noticed it was diagrammed back into Munich at 1507 so I decided to have it later. A plus two from one side of Munich Hbf station to the other was never going to make so I decided Simbach would have to wait for another day!
So I texted Betty for accommodation & brewery directions in Regensburg and went out to cover the Freising to Straubing diesel turn. This was a great bonus move as not only was the 218 required, when I got home I found I also required the track for diesel from Freising to Landshut!
After checking into the hotel Zum Frohlichen Turken it was a short walk to the Joh Albrecht brewery where the wheat beer was sampled. A bit further (in what was now a downpour) to the Spittal brewery (founded AD1226!) where several fine beverages and a top meal were consumed. A final drop of Ale in the Kneitinger brewery and a slow wobble back to the digs. Very merry, however no early start to worry about!

An uninterrupted day bashing pairs of Rabbits (nickname for 218's), only the required track from just outside Zwickau to Leipzig to worry about. An excellent start, 218275 (new) on the rear!
I was supposed to do the Leipzig based pair through to Nurnberg and back for the kliks but decided the Nothhaft brewery in Marktredwitz was a better way of spending a couple of hours!
Quick gen text to Betty as I couldn’t find it, then the beers flowed. It also meant I could cover the second Regensburg pair – and another required bunny produced! Far from expected but I wasn’t going to say no.
So a fill-in move to Zwickau before picking up the Leipzig train for the new track.
A few texts flew to and thro between myself & all those merrily doing a Bathams pub crawl around the Black country, before I made my way to the Bayerischer Bahnhof brewery in Leipzig housed in the old Bayerischer Bahnhof station, as the name suggests, for more beers & a schweinhaxe (sorry Betty!).
All capped off with a nicely empty overnight through to Stuttgart.
The Bayerischer Bahnhof brewery is in the old station building here

A day leading me to believe that someone in the Karlsruhe area had it in for me!
I dropped down to Freiburg to cover the two 218 turns as I need half the Haltingen allocation, one new rabbit producing. I then went for a stroll around the towns three breweries. The Kleines Freiburger Brauhaus didn’t open until 17:00 so I continued on to Hausbrauerei Feierling where I sampled two of their three brews (too early in the day for their Bock beer!). I stayed until I had fully dried off as once again the heavens had opened, then made my way to Martins Brau (underground, just through the gate in the city wall by Mcdonalds!) where the beer and food were both excellent.
Then the move was to get to Winden in time for the 218 shuttle to Wissembourg, various bits of new track Wissembourg to Monsheim. However we were all sat on the cart at Worth when the driver shut it down. Somewhat concerned I asked a DB bod what was going on – bus from outside the station!
Leapt outside with the rest of the passengers in hot pursuit – bus already gone! The air was blue.
Winden to Wissembourg now still required, cheers then.
Deep depression. No pubs in Monsheim (50 min fester!). Most hotels shut in Worms.
Then I found the hotel Kriemhilde right next to the Dom, booked in and off on my toes to the Hagenbrau brewpub on the river. The evening was loads better than the afternoon!

218358 at Munich on the 1509 to Simbach
First move of the day was required track under the wires for diesel between Worms & Mainz Sud – finished straight away by the new bunny!
Then to Wurzburg for new track for diesel to Lauda (although I nearly ended up in Hamburg as I watched 103167 (new) attach to the 0641 IR from Karlsruhe to Hamburg Altona at Frankfurt Hbf!) but I just managed to avoid leaping onto it! Lots of action at Lauda, a 212 came in on a freight and ran round, lots of photos of it & another 218 on an Aschaffenburg train.
Then a fast IC to Munchen for a quick Erdinger Weissbier then the 218 to Simbach. Last branch for diesel in the Muhldorf area (unless a diesel ever goes to Rosenheim!) and a required 2043 forward to boot.
Then a walk around Wels to find the Gerstl brewery, beer not as tasty as some but a top meal.
That was followed by a nice Austrian compo to myself to Koln, finishing the day off nicely.

The main aim of today was to try to get new bunnies on the Langenbergs, there were three winners out but the third went into its burrow rather than stick to diagram. And the unit stayed out just to increase the punishment. Sad moves I know but I still need several Hagen rabbits!
Steam heat out of Koblenz was once again sampled, prior to the rabbit take-over on the Trier turns.
Checked in to the Park hotel just up from the Bahnhof, then straight down the road to the Alt Giessen brewery for a session of beer and food.

Up for breakfast for 07:00 to cover a few turns on the Fulda line, only to find a possession was on with buses to/from Grossen Buseck. Cheers.
However all was not lost as 103217 rolled in on the IR to Hamburg. Once again I couldn’t go through to Hamburg – the lure of a 212 back to Geissen was too great. The 103 was delayed departing Marburg so a few photos, then a few of the 212 & finally one of a private owner ex DR 118 on an engineers train! A few memories of past small engine bashes went through my mind whilst I was bellowing out the front window on the run back to Geissen.
The next 6 moves might look like ned leaps (!) but I was actually covering the 1325 to Dillenburg (required track for diesel Wetzlar – Dillenburg) and knew should it be electric, required 215060 was coming back in from Koblenz. (It was withdrawn about 4 days later!).
So nothing for it but a bus to the other side of the blockade. For a unit to be sat in the platform.
A quick Erdinger for half an hour, to find no less than THREE hauled sets had arrived!
Four required 215’s later and a quick leap to a garage to get a couple of bottles of locally brewed beer and I was well pleased. I was quite content to relax for a few hours en-route to Leipzig.

218 229 at Memmingen on the 0751 Munich - Leutkirch
A good start to the day, 218422 in the book. This was followed by a good run down to Kempton, front compo in a proper ex IC coach. This proved to be a good move, 218470 appearing, for a choice of two moves:  a) 218 back to Kempton for the pair on the 0820 Munich to Lindau
 b) 218 over to Aulendorf and another down to Freidrichshafen

Move a) would give me an hour in Freidrichshafen for a beer in the Max Leibinger brewery, move b) would give me two hours in Freidrichshafen, time for food and beer.
Move b) was opted for, that was until another possession appeared before me! So a bus to Kisslegg for a unit to Hergatz, then the pair, resulting in a loss of kliks and only time for one beer in Freidrichshafen. The last thing I viewed at the airport prior to boarding the plane was a required Ulm 218 flying through the station!

Conclusion: A very good trip for both new track for diesel and new 218’s, slightly heavier on the pocket than normal due to visiting breweries most evenings!
